Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Doug was the son of Joanie (Bagelman) and the late Joel Bender.  After earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin, he established a respected career in real estate. While successful in business, he built his true legacy through his profound dedication to his faith and his leadership in the Jewish community.

Douglas was a cornerstone of Jewish life in South Florida, where a deep sense of responsibility and personal warmth defined his leadership. He served with distinction as the President of B’nai Torah Congregation, working tirelessly to strengthen the congregation’s foundations and foster a sense of belonging.  His commitment was further realized as a founding member and President of Congregation Shaarei Kodesh. In these roles, Doug was more than an executive; he was a visionary who helped build a spiritual sanctuary from the ground up, ensuring a vibrant home for future generations.

Doug shared 46 years of a loving marriage with his wife, Diane, whom he wed in 1979. He was the loving father of Adam (Samantha), Andrew (Kelsey Hope), and Mikey (Amanda). He was the cherished grandfather of Maxwell, Quinn, and Olivia, who were the light of his life. The beloved brother of Stephen Bender and his wife, Ania.
