Obituary

Raised in the Bronx though born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 23, 1934, to William Perry and Rose Levine, Marvin’s life was marked by an enduring passion for history, scholarship, and teaching. He earned his undergraduate degree from the City University of New York, completed his master’s at Duke University, and returned to CUNY to obtain his Ph.D. in history.

Dr. Perry served for many years as a professor of history at Baruch College, where he inspired generations of students with his deep knowledge and commitment to understanding the forces that shaped modern society.

He was the author of numerous widely respected works, including An Intellectual History of Modern Europe, Western Civilization: Ideas, Politics and Society, World War II in Europe, Anti-Semitism: Myth and Hate from Antiquity to the Present (co-authored with Frederick M. Schweitzer), and Anti-Semitic Myths: A Historical and Contemporary Anthology (co-edited with Schweitzer), among others.

Marvin was deeply devoted to ensuring that the memory and lessons of the Holocaust remained alive and relevant. His scholarly contributions and public engagement reflected his belief in the power of history to combat hatred and promote understanding. He was proud of his involvement with the Jewish Federation and remained active in causes that supported education, remembrance, and community.

Beyond academia, Marvin embraced life with enthusiasm and warmth. He was an avid tennis player, a skilled ballroom dancer, and a casual bridge player. He enjoyed playing guitar with a group at local nursing homes, lifting spirits through music. He also liked attending the theater and sharing laughter with friends and family through his signature wit and humor.

Marvin is survived by his cherished wife of almost 70 years, Phyllis; his children, Renee, Sharon, Daniel, and Steven; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Marilyn Fabricant.

He will be remembered not only for his scholarly achievements but for his kindness, his humor, and the joy he brought to those around him. Marvin touched countless lives as a teacher, friend, and family member. His legacy lives on through his work, his family, and the many people whose lives he enriched.
