Jewish Funeral Home in Boca Raton, Florida
Many funeral homes in South Florida carry Jewish names. Few are still Jewish.
We are. Kronish Funeral Services is locally owned; our funeral directors and staff are Jewish, and we are led by two people who have spent their lives here — not in a head office in another state.
We serve Boca Raton and all of Southeast Florida, any hour of any day.
- A Jewish funeral home that is actually Jewish
- Locally owned — no national corporate parent
- Typically about half the cost of the national chains
- Consecrated tahara and shmira facilities
- Available 24 hours a day
- Scholarship funds for families in genuine need
What Makes Us Different?
A Jewish Funeral Home That Is Actually Jewish
Most of the Jewish funeral home names families knew from the Northeast were bought by large funeral corporations. The names stayed on the buildings. Everything behind them changed. Many South Florida chapels carry a familiar Jewish name but are run by a national company.
They do not tell you. Not on the building. Not in the paperwork. Not on the website. A family walks in believing they are with the firm that buried their grandparents in Brooklyn, and nobody corrects them.
The staff arranging the funeral are often not Jewish. They learned Jewish practice from a manual. And the price is usually about double ours.
Who Runs This Firm
Keith Kronish, Co-CEO and Funeral Director in Charge, was born and raised in greater Miami. He ran Gutterman Warheit of Boca Raton for over twenty-five years, building it into one of the largest independent Jewish funeral homes in the country. He is a Founding Director of the National Independent Jewish Funeral Directors Association, has sat on the boards of Temple Beth El, B’nai Torah, Hillel, and Jewish Federation organisations, and testifies as an expert witness for families mistreated by other funeral homes.
Mark Sunshine, Co-CEO, is an attorney known internationally for anti-terrorism and antisemitism litigation, all of it pro bono. He is a past President of Temple Beth El of Boca Raton and twice fundraising chair for the American Cancer Society of South Palm Beach County.
If you have been part of Jewish life here, you may already know one of them.
Why It Matters
Arranging a Jewish funeral means decisions about tahara, shmira, tachrichim, and what a cemetery allows. Those conversations go differently with someone who has lived them. And when something is not necessary, we say so.
Grief is not a business opportunity. That is what we mean by keeping the Jewish funeral Jewish.
What a Jewish Funeral Costs in Boca Raton
We are typically about half the price of the national chains. An approximation, not a promise — but the right order of magnitude, and it has widened over the years. Not by cutting anything: we are locally owned and carry no corporate overhead.
We never charge more for kosher, and the price is the same whether you plan years in advance or call tonight.
Before you compare, know this. A price list shows the most a funeral home may charge per item. It is not what you pay — almost every family buys a package, and packages cost less. Ask for a written total for the funeral you actually want, then put ours beside it.
If You Cannot Afford A Funeral
Say so when you call. It will not change how you are treated.
For a family in genuine need, scholarship funds cover a graveside burial at South Florida Jewish Cemetery — a proper Jewish burial, with dignity. They do not cover a larger service, a different cemetery, or shipping out of state, which remain available and paid for as usual.
No one is turned away and denied a Jewish burial because of financial inability to pay.

What Happens When You Call?
What Happens After You Call
We come at any hour — home, hospital, hospice, or care facility, usually within approximately 90 minutes.
We sit down with you and go through what needs deciding. No hurry. No steering.
We arrange the chevra kadisha, work with your rabbi or find you one, and handle the cemetery, paperwork, and permits — including burial out of town or in Israel.
Tahara and Shmira
Tahara and Shmira in Boca Raton
Tahara is the ritual washing of the body by the chevra kadisha. Shmira is watching over the person until burial so they are never alone.
We keep consecrated, segregated facilities for both. Our tahara room is used by the chevra kadisha and no one else. That is not true everywhere — ask any funeral home you consider, us included.
Traditional burial uses tachrichim — plain linen shrouds — and a plain wooden casket with no metal.
Embalming
For in-ground burial, no. Florida law does not require it, and Jewish tradition does not call for it. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.
For a mausoleum crypt, yes. Beth El Mausoleum requires it, as mausoleums generally do. We will tell you which applies before you decide.

Cemeteries
Where Boca Raton Families Are Buried
South Florida Jewish Cemetery, Lake Worth — our partner. Non-profit, Green Burial Council certified, the only cemetery here devoted solely to traditional Jewish burial. No vault, embalming, or sealed casket. Together we provide complete funerals and burials at about one-third the price of most providers.
Beth El Mausoleum, SW 4th Avenue — crypts and niches on Temple Beth El’s campus, the only mausoleum in the US built on synagogue grounds. Open to members, non-members, and interfaith families. Entombment requires embalming.
Boca Raton Cemetery and Boca Raton Mausoleum share grounds on SW 4th Avenue but are separate. The cemetery is municipal, non-sectarian, and open to Boca Raton residents only. The mausoleum is open to anyone. Both are beautifully kept.
Temple Beth El Memorial Gardens, 4900 Griffin Road, Davie — a cemetery we work with often. Despite the name, a different institution from Beth El Mausoleum in Boca. If your family bought at “Beth El,” check which one. We can confirm by phone.
South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth — for veterans. A gravesite, headstone, burial flag, and perpetual care at no cost, and a spouse is covered in the same gravesite even if they die first. You will need the DD-214. We handle scheduling and honours.
Plots elsewhere? Tell us — we work with every Jewish cemetery in the region.
Out of town, Israel, and travel
If Your Family's Plot Is Somewhere Else
Many families here own plots up north or in Israel, bought decades ago. We handle those arrangements in full.
We Use GPS Trackers. Every Time.
When a loved one is shipped out of town, they travel as air cargo. Families are rarely told this, and it frightens them once they realise.
We place a GPS tracker with every person we ship, so we know in real time where your loved one is. If a shipment goes the wrong way, we know before anyone asks. We are the only funeral home in South Florida doing this on every shipment, and we do not charge for it.
We do not embalm before shipping. Most funeral homes do it as routine. Embalming is contrary to Jewish tradition and is not necessary to send someone home.
Travel Protection
Bringing someone home from another state or country is expensive, slow, and hard to arrange from a distance.
Before you travel, we add travel protection to your contract. You tell us you are going away. We add it. You do not have to ask.
The national firms charge $500 to $1,000 for the same coverage. We do it at $0 cost to you, because it is the right thing to do.
Who We Serve
You Do Not Need to Belong to a Synagogue
Most Jewish families here are not synagogue members. A family that has never belonged often assumes a Jewish funeral is not really for them. It is.
Being Jewish is enough — as is being married to a Jew, or identifying as a Jew whether or not there was a formal conversion. We are not the body that decides who belongs.
No rabbi? We will find you one — Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox, matched to how your family lives. Not sure what you observe? We will explain the choices without pressure. Interfaith family? Tell us early — some cemeteries accommodate interfaith burial, and some do not.
We serve families who are not Jewish too. Many come for the same reasons Jewish families do — how we work, what we charge, and how we treat people.
Planning Ahead
Planning in Advance
Your money is protected. We escrow prepaid funds with an insurance company — the only Jewish funeral home in South Florida doing this as standard. Insurance obligations are backed by the Florida insurance guaranty fund. Most funeral homes use a trust instead, and trusts are where a great deal of prepaid funeral money has been lost.
Prepayments are always transferable. If you prepaid elsewhere, it can move to us, and where you paid more than our charges, we refund the difference — often thousands of dollars.
Giving Back
How We Give Back
Supporting medical research is one of the ways we give back to the community that supports us. We donate time, facilities, and funds to research into Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, and other dementias, with the University of Florida, the University of Colorado brain banks, and the Florida Brain Bank. Families who take part receive a pathology report confirming the diagnosis, which would otherwise cost thousands.
We also offer post-mortem DNA testing and storage, which can tell children and grandchildren about inherited risks worth knowing early. No other funeral home in Florida, apart from our affiliates, does either proactively. Both are optional and never pushed.

H2: Common Questions
Are you actually a Jewish funeral home? Yes. Locally owned, Jewish staff, led by two people who have spent their lives here. Many chapels carry Jewish names but are owned by national corporations — and do not tell you.
Do we have to belong to a synagogue? No. If you have no rabbi, we will find one. We serve non-Jewish families too.
How much less do you cost? Roughly half the national chains. To compare properly, ask each funeral home for a written total for the funeral you want — a price list shows maximum item-by-item prices, not what families pay.
What if we cannot afford a funeral? Tell us when you call. For families in genuine need, scholarship funds cover a graveside burial at South Florida Jewish Cemetery — not a larger service, a different cemetery, or shipping out of state. No one is turned away and denied a Jewish burial for inability to pay.

Your Grief is unique
Your unique experience of grief may be based on factors like your relationship to the person who has died, the circumstances of his or her death, and your own personality. For example, it is not uncommon to experience a long denial phase after the sudden and unexpected death of a loved one.
Acceptance is not necessarily a permanent state, nor does it mark a return to happiness or your pre-loss state of mind. The death of your loved one has changed the circumstances of your world, and acceptance marks your understanding of this, as well as your willingness to move forward in life without them. Think of the loss as a tear in the fabric of your life: the pain will ease over time, but in some ways, the loss may always be with you.
Throughout your grieving process, you will likely experience a range of mental, physical, and emotional symptoms, from dizziness to loss of appetite to inability to concentrate. Understand that, while sometimes frightening, such symptoms are completely normal.
