“You Shall Love Your Neighbor As Yourself” (Leviticus 19:18)

The Guide To Funeral Etiquette

Attending a Funeral is not an everyday occurrence.

This guide will help you say and do the Right Things.

Dress conservatively and wear muted and/or dark colors. Men should always wear a blue blazer (and often a tie) and women should wear modest clothing that is appropriate for a job interview (but still muted and/or dark colors).

If you are invited you should make every effort to attend. If you are not invited but know the person or family well enough to wonder if you should attend, then attend the funeral. The only exception to this rule is when the funeral is private.

Approximately 15 minutes before the beginning of the service.

Anywhere other than the first few rows which are reserved for the family.

Your cell phone should be off. Do not mute it, turn off the power.

While it isn’t your funeral, you still should not do or say anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you feel uncomfortable, you can still show love and respect for the deceased and the family by attending and sitting quietly.

If you feel that you want or need to cry, then cry. Don’t worry about what you think people will say. If you are overwhelmed you can go outside or to the foyer.

No, you should not.

Yes. Even if you were unable to attend the funeral go to the reception.
